“The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered”
Revelation 5:5
THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD, AND THE FIRMAMENT SHOWETH HIS HANDIWORK
PSALM 19:1-4.
A Psalm of David.
There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world
David, the shepherd-king, must have pondered the glory of the heavens as he tended his sheep beneath them both day and night. And the wonder of what he saw—the endless array of planets and stars, sun and moon—powerfully declared the reality of the Creator. For His glory and perfection and power are nowhere more to be seen than in the heavens. The sky is His canvas. A night and day, worldwide canvas where His glory is always on display. Not even Michelangelo’s talents on the ceiling of the Sistene Chapel do it justice.
So it has been from the beginning, when the ancients worshipped what they did not know or understand. Today science continues to deepen our appreciation for God’s unalterable design. The more we learn about how the universe is structured, and how it works, the more fully we appreciate the unseen hand that first set it all in place – and holds it there by His Word of Power (Hebrews 1:3)
The skies are a message from God: “universal” evidence of His existence and power. Yet they reveal not only His power, but the love which He desires to bestow on the least of us, regardless of who we are or whether or not we deserve that love.
Our rejection of God’s revelation of Himself in nature is inexcusable. For even as the Hebrews crossed the wilderness between Egypt and the new promised land (1446 B.C.), they were warned by Moses that stars and planets are not deities or spirits—they are creations of God. “And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them.” Deut. 4:19
Much later (5-62 A.D.), the apostle Paul wrote to the more worldly Hebrews of his time:
“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made.”
